Upcycled Pine
Last week, a good friend asked if I could help her build a barn door-style door. I’ve built a few and knew it wouldn’t be too hard a job, so I agreed. She brought over 25 board feet of used Douglas Fir that came from an old house she had torn down. It was in pretty rough shape with some warps, splits, and old paint, but she was looking for the rustic feel, and with that wood, we already had a good start.
We did our best to get a straight edge and then created a parallel straight edge, but we weren’t too concerned with flat (it wouldn’t have been possible). From there, we cut shiplap edges on the main boards and cut the cross pieces to width. It was just a matter of screwing it all together after that. I probably wouldn’t have used screws, but she wanted it to be pretty sturdy since it was for outside use.
While I’m not too into the rustic look, and I really don’t like working with used materials, I think it came out pretty well. It was exactly what she wanted, and it was fun to do a project with someone else. I’m used to working alone.
