I created another gift project! About three months ago, I retired from federal service, and I’ve been loving every minute in the shop. I’ve mostly been working on projects for the house– space-saving and organizational options (I’ll post some of those later on). Most recently, I built myself a laptop desk, and I decided to build two to include as part of my gift collection. I used Spanish cedar and wormy maple on one, and I use some random jointed pieces for the top of the other. I included a leather insert with elastic to hold pens, pencils, notepads, etc. It is hinged with brass hardware and closes with magnets. It required a great deal of detailed work and several coats of polyurethane. I used ¼” finger joints to join the sides. It only took a couple of days to prepare the lumber and put the cases together, but the leather work and the varnish turned it into a week-long project. I’m quite pleased with the results. I hope to participate in our local Artisan shop as a guest artist in Jemez Springs later this fall. I’ll provide dates when I get them, and if you’re in the area, please stop by, and maybe you’ll see this item on display.
